Polar Bear Bonaza

Happy Groundhog Day Marcia Buker Families!

According to WCSH, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow today. I hope a little more snow comes with the predicted six more weeks of winter! It's been great for the students to have a winter landscape to play in as we close out the month of January and start February.

We ended the month with an early release teacher workshop in the afternoon. Teachers and ed techs came together to make final adjustments to the new school vision statement that we have been working on since August. (We will be sharing our vision with you in the coming weeks!). Then grade-level and program teams met to make adjustments to instruction, groupings, and individual plans based on data and student progress.

Thanks to the careful and dedicated work of our entire Marcia Buker team, when we reach the 100th day of learning this month, we will truly have something to celebrate!

In partnership with you,

Mary

Thanks to Nurse Ashley DeWever for leading the WinterKids initiatives and to all the teachers who engaged students in learning about the weather through special projects, experiments, data collection, art, and reading! Richmond kids truly are Winter Kids!

Glimpses of our amazing Marcia Buker Team

The snow and arctic cold came just in time for the kick off of the grade 1 and 2 Polar Bear Bonanza, a two-week-long , multidisciplinary study of the fascinating animal and its habitat.

To support the learning and allow the entire school to participate, Art Teacher Milliken and the 5th graders created this polar bear den in the library reading nook that all students visit during library time!

A refined vision for Marcia Buker School was the focus of our collaborative time on Friday.

The talking stick is passed around as each staff member responds to the draft vision statement--from the newest addition to our Marcia Buker team, Ms. Beaulieu, to the most experienced, Cindy Reed. The final vote sent the vision back to the Vision Committee for a few minor revisions.

Forest Friday Goes on the Road!

Superintendent Kempton and the first grade teachers, Jen Merrill and Christina Parkhurst, make preparations to share the unique and excellent outdoor learning program, Forest Friday, at the March 27th Kennebec Valley Superintendents' Association Showcase Event. Forest Friday was launched 9 years ago in the first grade, and the teachers continue to develop the curriculum and outdoor space, and expand opportunities to other classes. The Showcase event is a wonderful opportunity for Marcia Buker to share the great things happening at our school and inspire other educators around the state.
