WinterKids

Greetings Families!

I hope this finds you enjoying a relaxing weekend and, especially, the milder temps!

We had a great week at school. The frigid temperatures meant indoor recess on a couple of days, but teachers and students were resourceful in coming up with ways to spend the time. Friday's milder weather finally allowed students to let off all the pent up energy! The highlight of the week was our first-ever Family Math Night on Thursday. You can read about it in the It Takes a Village section below.

This coming week, the highlight will be on Monday, when our school hosts the kickoff off to WinterKids Games 2025 for the 16 schools in the state who were selected to participate! Marcia Buker students and staff will form a parade around the playground with student-made banners and mitten flags. Our Bobcat mascot and some high school students will lead us in a cheer. WMTW will be on campus for the event, so watch for us on the news! If we know when the event will be broadcast, we will let you know.

During the 4-week WinterKids Winter Games, schools across the state complete fun, engaging challenges. This year's WinterKids theme is Weather 2025! At Marcia Buker, we will complete as many of the suggested activities as possible and maybe earn a few prize dollars. Even if we don't win anything, we will have fun learning about weather and enjoying the outdoors together. We encourage our families to participate in this collective effort to "help children develop healthy lifelong habits through education and fun outdoor winter activities (WinterKids.org)." Download the WinterKids App and get access to discounts on outdoor fun in Maine! You can also participate and support our efforts by exploring weather science at home, and asking your child about the activities they are doing at school. On Monday, please make sure your child wears their winter gear to school for the WinterKids kickoff!

In partnership with you,

Mary

Family Math Night: Our first-ever Family Math Night was a great success and a perfect example of our strong school-community partnership. The event began with an idea, by 4th grade teacher Taylor Maloney, to have a Family Math Night to complement our long-standing Family Reading Night, led by Jen Merrill. With a team of teachers, the math night idea grew over the next few months into a plan and then into a reality. Of course, the key to the success of Family Math Night is families! Would they come out, we wondered, on a bitterly cold January night to do math games with their children? The photos from the evening in the Bobcat Sightings video reveals the the answer! We thank the family members who could come for helping us achieve our goal of encouraging confidence with and enjoyment of math among students. And I thank the teachers who, through their collective effort and dedication, launched a new tradition at Marcia Buker!

AM Student Drop-off Reminder: We kindly ask that you follow the important guidelines below so that all families have a timely and safe drop off.

  1. Be as quick as possible getting your child out of your car and into school. Long goodbyes hold up the line behind you.

  2. If you must walk your child to the door, please pull ahead beyond the exit or into the municipal parking lot and park to allow stream of vehicles to keep moving forward.

  3. Pull to near the turn onto the exit road before having your child get out of the car (This is a matter of safety).

Thank you so much for your help with this!
