Eclipse art

Greetings Families!

We have come through another spring snowstorm! Because many families still had no power or other storm-related problems today, student attendance was down quite a bit. We were glad to see those who made it in, and we missed those who couldn't.

I want to, once again, commend the MBES Team for showing up. Literally. We were 99.8% staffed today, even though many teachers and support staff have concerns at home to deal with as well. I'm proud to be part of this excellent team!

Weather-wise, Monday's forecast looks spectacular for viewing the eclipse. School will release early to allow students to get home or to daycare safely, and then to safely watch the show. The superintendent's office has provided every student with a pair of eclipse sun glasses and reinforced the importance of using them. I hope you will do the same at home. That shadow on the sun makes it seem very safe to look at, and some children are not inclined to be influenced by warnings we boring adults issue!

To help kids take another danger seriously, last year the Governor made the month of May Lyme Disease Awareness month, and the CDC is getting kids involved in spreading the message. See Nurse Ashley's message below for details about a poster contest!

Wishing you one last weekend of fun in the snow!

Message from Nurse Ashley

Hello Families!

The Maine CDC is sponsoring a Lyme Disease Awareness Month poster contest! The theme is Little Tick, Big Deal. Children in grades K-8 are eligible to make and submit a poster by April 30th. The parent must sign a waiver in order for a child's poster to be submitted. The rules and waiver documents are linked below and paper copies will come home with your child on Friday. I would be happy to collect all posters created by students at Marcia Buker and mail them in all at once!

From the CDC: Kids in Maine ages 5-14 years old have one of the highest rates of tick-borne diseases in Maine, including Lyme disease. Maine CDC wants to encourage all youth in Maine to take tick prevention seriously and show off their knowledge in this poster contest! Posters should illustrate at least one of the four approaches to personal prevention:

  • Use caution in tick-infested areas

  • Use an EPA-approved repellent

  • Wear protective clothing

  • Perform daily tick checks both by sight and by touch

Contest rules
Poster submission waiver

Thank you for helping me bring awareness to Lyme Disease!

Nurse Ashley DeWever, RN. BSN
