Veterans Day Flag

11/10/23

Greetings MBES Families!

I hope you have had a great week. As we approach Veterans Day, I am reminded that one of the most precious gifts we have in America is access to public education. As we observe the holiday on Friday,  the Marcia Buker Team sends sincere gratitude to all of the Richmond community members who have served in uniform for our freedom and democracy.

Spotlight on Teaching and Learning

Telling Room: Poetry Workshop

For many years, students in grade 5 (and 4 until last year) have participated in a twelve-week immersive writing experience taught by The Telling Room, an artist in residence program. This year, our budget prevented us from running the program. When the Telling Room team learned of this, they offered to run a 5-day poetry workshop for grade 5. Mr. K and Mrs. G said, “Our 5th graders got to experience and interpret the natural world through haiku and free verse. It was a very exciting adventure!” The workshop culminated in a classroom poetry slam during which students read aloud their poems. As an audience member, I was struck not only by the quality of the poems but also by how important it is for students to write for real audiences and practice public speaking. The teachers will be creating a low-budget booklet of the poems as a keepsake for the students. Please enjoy a few selected works!

The snowman tries something new

   ~ Sydney Lynn Spear

The snowman got bored of just wearing his plain old suit
He decided he wanted to try a different suit
He went to the suit store.
There was a bunch of options
There was a prom suit - “No, too fancy”!
A work suit, he thought. “No, too lame!”
Then he found the perfect one - the snowsuit.
He went to try it on. “It fits!” He said.
He brought it home with him.
“I love this! I am never taking it off!”

Some people like marshmallows.
They like candy canes.

The Tall Wall

 ~ Keira Letendre

Three Big walls make the back of an alleyway.
The only light coming from the street comes from down the bay.
Everyday there is a new art display.
One day, there was graffiti of a purple rose.
Day two, there is an image of a scarecrow.
Day three, a swish of blue and cyan making a lake.
One day, the artist was caught in the middle of the day.
A group of kids painting away a new picture of a beautiful crane.
