Dear MBES Families,

We have had a short but active 4-day week at school! In addition to the usual learning, students participated in fire safety presentations as well as bus safety drills. Observing the bus evacuation and road-crossing drills with Pre-K and kindergarten students, I could see how valuable the practice would prove to be in everyday and real emergency situations. The activities were memorable too; some students added fire escape routes to their fairy houses at recess! To help reinforce the important messages at home, you might ask your child to tell you what they learned this week about fire and bus safety.

This week also featured a dramatic change in temps. It suddenly became fall on Friday, and it caught some of us off guard.  It's time to get out the hats, mittens, and warmer coats and send them with your child.   (If you need assistance with cold weather gear, please give Deb or Kerry a call.)

Next week, students in grades 3-5 will be taking state assessments in reading and math. The fall version of the Maine state assessment (called Through Year Assessment) is the familiar NWEA assessment. Please encourage your child to do their best and talk with them about the assessment. This can give many students a sense of ownership and personal pride in the experience.

The October PTG meeting was moved to October 18 at 6:00 PM in the MBES library, or you can join remotely with this link:  meet.google.com/ysa-aqez-sgk

I have enjoyed Nurse Ashley's bright autumn bulletin board this month, so I wanted to share with you these great pumpkin tips for staying strong and healthy.

Now you have an excuse to dance this weekend!    ~ Mary
